Forest Walk to Enter

A name rooted
in belonging

The word Oakakhi holds two souls: "oak," the ancient trees sheltering this hillside, and akhi, meaning "in the lap of" in the Pahadi tongue. Together: in the lap of the oaks. Held. Sheltered. Home.

Set near the ancient Kalika Temple on the ridges of Ranikhet, Oakakhi is reached by a short forest walk, a deliberate pause between the world you left and the one waiting for you. On the other side: oak canopy, mountain wind, and the unhurried rhythm of Kumaoni life.

"Some places entertain you. Some places transform you quietly. Oakakhi hopes to belong to the second kind."

The Oakakhi Philosophy

Born here.
Built for this.

Nishant grew up watching these peaks from these very ridges. He left to learn, to explore, to work with global hospitality companies. But his love for nature and his love for the mountains never left him.

The mountains called him back. Not to visit, but to build. Oakakhi is his dream made real: a place where strangers become guests, guests become friends, and mountains become the backdrop for honest conversation.

He will walk you through the forest. Show you which birds appear at dawn. Point to Orion rising over the ridgeline on winter nights, name the constellations one by one. Oakakhi is his love letter to Ranikhet, and guests are invited to read it.

Stargazing
at Oakakhi

At 6,000 feet, far from the light pollution of any city, Oakakhi sits under one of the clearest night skies in the Kumaun region. When the clouds part, the Milky Way is not a rumour. It is right there, arching from ridge to ridge.

Nishant has spent years watching these skies. He will show you Orion rising over the eastern ridge in winter, point out Pleiades, trace the path of Jupiter, and explain why the ancients named the stars they did. No telescope required. Just clear air, warm blankets, and time.

Best Season

October to March for clearest skies. Winter nights are cold but extraordinary. Summer monsoon clouds limit visibility.

What to Expect

1.5 to 2 hour session with Nishant. Constellations, planets, stories of the night sky from Kumaoni and astronomical traditions.

What to Bring

Warm layers, curiosity, and patience. Nishant provides hot chai and blankets. The sky provides everything else.

"Some nights the sky feels like a ceiling you forgot was always there."

Bird Watching
in the Oak Forest

The oak forest around Oakakhi is a living library of birdsong. Himalayan species that most city visitors have never seen pass through these trees daily. The Khalij Pheasant, Himalayan Bulbul, Blue Whistling Thrush, and dozens more make their home here year round.

Nishant knows their songs before he sees them. He was raised listening to these forests. A dawn session with him is less a guided tour and more an introduction to neighbours you didn't know you had.

Best Time

First light, between 5:30 and 8:00 AM. This is when birds are most active and the forest is most alive with sound and movement.

Species Seen

Khalij Pheasant, Himalayan Bulbul, Blue Whistling Thrush, Red-billed Blue Magpie, and various warblers and flycatchers by season.

Duration

2 to 3 hours walk through the oak grove. Slow, unhurried. This is not a hike. It is a listening session that happens to involve walking.

"Before the mountains show themselves, the birds announce them."

Forest Walks
through the Oaks

The oak trees around Oakakhi are old. Some have stood here for decades, their roots deep in the Himalayan soil, their canopy a ceiling of green that shifts with every breeze. Walking through them with Nishant is different from walking alone. He knows this forest the way you know your own neighbourhood.

He will show you which mushrooms grow after the monsoon. Which bark smells like rain. Where the deer come to drink. The forest walk is not about distance covered. It is about the world noticed.

Route

Circular walk through the oak grove surrounding Oakakhi. 2 to 4 km depending on pace and interest. Accessible for all fitness levels.

What You Learn

Local ecology, Kumaoni forest traditions, medicinal plants, seasonal changes. The kind of knowledge that lives in people, not books.

When to Go

Morning or late afternoon. Autumn brings golden light through the leaves. Monsoon turns everything intensely green. All seasons offer something.

"The forest doesn't tell you what to think. It just gives you space to think it."

Village Tour
Dadgaliya

Dadgaliya is not a tourist attraction. It is a real Kumaoni village, and Nishant grew up here. The people who live here are his people. Which means when you walk through with him, you are not a visitor on a set tour. You are a guest being introduced to a community.

You will see how Kumaoni homes are built, how the fields are worked, how women grind grain the old way. You might share tea in someone's courtyard. If you are lucky, a local family will invite you to watch them cook. These moments cannot be scheduled. But Nishant creates the conditions for them.

Duration

2 to 3 hours. A slow, unscripted walk through the village and surrounding farmland. No rush. No fixed itinerary.

What to Expect

Traditional stone architecture, terraced farms, local temples, and genuine conversations with villagers who have known Nishant all his life.

Cultural Note

Please dress respectfully and ask before photographing people. Nishant will guide you on what is welcome and what is not.

"The best way to understand a place is to walk it with someone who belongs to it."

Bonfire Evenings
under the open sky

There is something about fire that makes people honest. The bonfire at Oakakhi is not a feature. It is an event. Guests gather after dinner, the mountains go dark, the stars come out, and somewhere in the warmth and the crackle, conversations happen that people remember for years.

Nishant sometimes plays music. Sometimes he just listens. Some evenings guests bring instruments. Some evenings nobody speaks much. The fire doesn't require an agenda. It just asks that you sit with it for a while.

When

Most evenings, weather permitting. Especially beautiful in winter when the air is sharp and the mountains are snow-capped. Nishant will let you know in advance.

What's Included

The fire, chai or local herbal tea, blankets if needed, and Nishant's company. Sometimes music. Always conversation, or comfortable silence.

Atmosphere

Informal. Unhurried. No schedule. Some bonfires last two hours, some last until midnight. The guests decide when they've had enough of the sky.

"Strangers met around that fire. They left as something more."

Sight Seeing
Ranikhet like a local

Ranikhet has history, temples, and views that most visitors only skim. With Nishant, you go deeper. He was born here. He knows which corner of Chaubatia Garden catches the best morning light. Which time to visit Kalika Temple when it is quiet. Which road gives you the clearest line to Nanda Devi.

Transport is arranged. The pace is yours. This is not a bus tour. It is a conversation with the place, guided by someone who has had it his whole life.

Key Places

Kalika Temple, Chaubatia Apple Orchards, Ranikhet Golf Course, Jhula Devi Temple, Bhalu Dam, and the Himalayan viewpoints along the ridge.

Transport

Local taxi arranged by Nishant. Comfortable, well-maintained. Nishant accompanies you and provides full context at each location.

Duration

Half day (4 hours) or full day. Customised based on what you want to see and how much you want to wander.

"Every town has a version for tourists and a version for those who belong. Nishant shows you the second one."
